How to Choose a Fragrance That Actually Lasts All Day

Fragrance · September 2026 · Vellure Team

"This doesn't last on me" is one of the most common fragrance complaints, and it usually comes down to a handful of fixable factors rather than the fragrance itself being poorly made.

Concentration Matters More Than Brand

An eau de parfum contains a higher percentage of fragrance oil than a body mist or cologne concentration, which is the single biggest factor in how long a scent actually lasts on skin — more than the specific brand or price point.

Where You Apply It Changes How Long It Lasts

Pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) run slightly warmer, which helps diffuse fragrance throughout the day — spraying onto clothing instead of skin can also extend wear, since fabric holds scent differently than skin does.

Skin Type Affects Longevity Too

Drier skin tends to hold fragrance less well than well-moisturized skin, since fragrance has less to cling to — which is part of why a layering oil applied first can genuinely extend how long a scent lasts.

Layering Extends Wear More Than Reapplying

Reapplying the same spray partway through the day mostly refreshes the top notes rather than fundamentally extending wear — building a base with a matching lotion or oil before applying fragrance is generally more effective than just using more product later.

If a fragrance seems to disappear within an hour, the fix is more often about application (skin prep, pulse points, layering) than about needing a completely different scent.
